For the past week or so I’ve been keeping a development journal detailing my thoughts about reworking Revelation. I’ve sent the first several entries on to the Asimovs and I asked Josh if I should post them to this blog. He said no, that they were too “Inside Baseball” and that people don’t really want to look that far into the writing process. I’m inclined to agree. The general public probably doesn’t care about how to structure a story, how to build characters or avoid plot holes.
But this site, despite a large mobile tech following, is and always has been for writers.
One of the reasons I compiled and maintained the “JMS on Writing” archives (which I need to repost at some point) back in the 90s was that I was fascinated with Joe’s look behind the scenes of Babylon 5 and wanted to soak up everything he had to teach me. Same thing with Terry Rossio’s Wordplayer series of columns on screenwriting. So it occurs to me that while my mobile tech fans may not care less about the craft of writing and what goes into actually putting a novel together, I have a unique opportunity here for my writing fans to actually bring them with me through the process. What’s more, since Between Heaven and Hell is publically available, this gives people a chance to see the source material of an adaptation (for that’s really what I’m doing, more adapting each novella into a novel rather than a simple rewrite) and see exactly how the characters and plot change into the new form.
So it falls to you, the reader. I’m going to keep journaling about what I’m doing, since it’s really helping me sort out how to approach this. The question is whether I share that journal just with the Asimovs or if I post it here. Let me know in the comments if you really want to see what I’m doing and why (and offer suggestions if you feel so inclined) while I write, or if you’d rather I keep that to myself and just post more about mobile tech.

I’d be interested in reading it. You could put it here, or start another blog.
The last thing I need is another blog. A big part of the reason for changing the name of this site from Writing On Your Palm to JeffKirvin.net was to make that sort of thing unnecessary. What I write about, I write about here.
Okay, that’s one vote for, and a vast thundering silence against. Of course, me being the loudmouth I am, any encouragement is dangerous…
Jeff, I have purchased BHaH, and all of your serials. I have been reading all of your incarnations of blogs and mailing lists and I really hope that you can follow through on this. I vote to put it up here for all to read. However, I do worry that this is one more thing that I will invest time in only to see it go away unfinished. I hope I am wrong good luck I am looking forward to it
“invest time in only to see it go away unfinished…”
How do you think I feel?
By the way, once I get done with this trilogy, I’ll be fully prepared to complete Unification. So if you hang in there with me (and keep egging me on when necessary) you’ll get the whole story eventually.
Jeez this is a hard one. But I’ve always loved your tech reviews. I vote tech!
I think you should publish everything. All you comments on your writing as well as your tech reviews.
Just remember to tag each entry.
Let it all hang out, tech, writing, UC, BHAH, you are a sciz…multifacieted guy
