New Home, New Look, Same Jeff

After eight years, I’m shuttering Writing On Your Palm. I’m in the process of moving all the WOYP content over to JeffKirvin.net; the blog posts are already here, the columns are soon to follow, then illustrations from the old site. By the end of this weekend I expect all the useful content from WOYP to be accessible from JeffKirvin.net.

Housecleaning aside, why am I doing this?

Several reasons, really, and only a few dependent on coffee.

It’s time for a fresh start. I’ve been working on WOYP with varying degrees of enthusiasm for eight years and the mobile tech landscape has changed enormously in that time. What was once a cute play on words has become something of an anachronism, and I’m ready to move on.

The new JeffKirvin.net will be focused much more on writing, but it will also tackle tech subjects like Vista, Windows Mobile, Office 2007, Google Docs and other nifty if decidedly unmobile topics. If WOYP was about using mobile technology for writing, JeffKirvin.net is about using any technology for writing.

I’m also branching out as I consolidate. JeffKirvin.net will have a PHPbb discussion forum, probably a podcast and I hope to update it at least daily. I’m really serious about getting Revelation written and published, and this site is going to be a look behind the scenes at a working novelist.

Also, not to put too fine a point on it, this site should make me some money. I’m going to be putting up ads soon (oh, quit your grousing) and I hope that this site, plus my novel advances and just maybe royalties (most novels never earn out their advance), will pay my admittedly frugal bills and allow me to write full time. The inevitable ads are why I picked the very looks-like-a-newspaper theme for this site; they should look more natural that way. I know several people who make their living from tech websites (Jason Dunn, James Kendrick, other people without a J first initial) and I plan on pumping them for all the info I can on how they do it.

Because when you get right down to it, writing is really the only thing I do well. And it’s high time I started getting serious about making a living at it. So welcome to the new JeffKirvin.net, and I look forward to our discussions to come.
