Sharp has released a new Zaurus optimized for online use. Like all Zaurii, this unit will run a customized build of Linux, as opposed to the mainstream PDA OS choices (Windows Mobile and PalmOS). It boasts both MP3 and WMA playback, a 416mHz processor and a VGA screen. The C1000 comes standard with 128 MB of Flash RAM and 64 MB of SDRAM, but no WiFi. Wireless connectivity can be added through a CF card.
This unit looks like it could be an ideal mobile writer’s unit, if one weren’t concerned with compatibility. It certainly hedges on subnotebook territory, especially given that it can run virtually any graphical application for Linux, as long as it fits in the memory space. I’ve heard of a custom build of AbiWord for Zaurus, as well as other apps. Plus, with wireless, it opens up the option of SSH (read: remote desktop) into other systems and utilizing their GUIs and processing power.
All-in-all, a fun toy, for sure. I have no practical use for one.
Besides, it’s only available in Japan, at least for now.
